How to Update Home Security When Someone Moves Out

Home security has never been more important to consider, especially with so many home invasions and armed robberies happening across the country. That’s what makes the work of Security Shepherd so essential; their primary goal is to educate and inform the home security community about the importance of installation and maintenance of video surveillance systems in homes and businesses. We caught up with their founder and president, Richard Schwartz, to get his take on the recent trends in home security and what to expect in the future.

Is Video Surveillance a Luxury or Necessity?

“Luxury” is probably the wrong word to describe video surveillance in general. Many home security systems can be acquired for a reasonable cost that can be covered by even the smallest homeowner’s insurance policy. Many systems offer basic features for free, so the true luxury in home security comes from the extra features that you can purchase and integrate into your system.

The important thing to keep in mind when choosing a video surveillance system is how much space you have to work with. If you’ve got a smaller home or apartment, you might want to consider a more limited feature set and basic surveillance options. Don’t expect to integrate and utilize the many extra features that a premium-grade system provides if you don’t have the room to accommodate them. In that case, it’s better to opt for the more affordable yet functional and reliable option.

On the other hand, if you’ve got a larger space and can easily accommodate a premium-grade system, you might want to consider paying a little more for the luxury of being able to integrate advanced and sophisticated features that home security systems have to offer. Of course, there’s also the option of simply going for the premium-grade system and having everything you need to protect your home and family anyway.

What Home Security Features Should I Look For?

The features that you should look for in a home security system depend on what you’re trying to accomplish. For example, if your goal is just to have a record of your home’s interior (especially if you’re not using any of the advanced features), you might want to opt for a basic security camera that offers the minimal functionality required for that purpose.

On the other hand, if your goal is to protect your family against intruders and potential home invasions, you might want to consider investing in an advanced security video surveillance system that offers the user-friendly features required to implement a high-quality video security architecture in your home or business.

The Importance of Alarm Integration

If you decide to integrate with a home security company that offers monitoring and alarm response, you’ll have the option of selecting one of their alarm monitoring centers, which will monitor and respond to all of your alarms (including those from your security cameras).

Alarm integration is extremely important for the home security industry because it provides users with the convenience of having their alarm call routed to the monitoring station, wherever they might be. If the monitoring center is able to connect with you and your security cameras via the internet, they can view live video from anywhere in the world and alert authorities or family members as needed. This is a great feature for when you’re away from home and don’t want to worry about whether or not someone will come through the front door.

Keep in mind that alarm integration requires you to have a reliable internet connection. If you’re planning on using mobile phones as your access point, you’ll want to have at least 4G LTE service. The type and quantity of mobile phones that you have access to will also determine how well the alarm system functions (especially since the majority of the communication takes place over the internet).

Alarm integration is also very convenient for the responders as well, as they won’t have to worry about finding your home or business.

The Importance of IP Cameras

If you decide that your security cameras should be installed in areas that are hard to reach (like ceilings or behind walls), you might want to consider opting for an IP camera. IP cameras provide many advantages to the home security community, most notably convenience and ease of use. For example, the majority of the home security cameras released in the last year offer 1080p video at 60 frames per second, which provides excellent image quality (even when compared to high-end video cameras that were released years ago). In addition, their small form factor makes them ideal for installing in hard to reach spaces and positions.

Of course, the size and weight of the camera will depend on what you’re trying to accomplish and where you’re trying to place it. If you’re simply looking to keep an eye on your children or pets while you’re away from home, a small camera that’s capable of recording in the dark might be all you need. In that case, you might consider simply getting a cheap and cheerful point-of-sale camera that records in the dark and is easy to use.

On the other hand, if your security cameras are going to be monitored by more than one person (like at a retail store or bank), you might want to consider getting a specialized camera that’s designed for use in harsh environments (like retail and banking centers). These cameras are typically more expensive than the average point-of-sale camera, but worth it if you’re planning on using them for more than just monitoring traffic or catching perpetrators of crimes in the act. The same goes for using them outside of a home environment as well, especially if there’s lots of motion and you need to be able to focus sharply for long periods of time. You can also get an HD camera with an infrared night vision capability, which will help you see things clearly even when the lighting is low or in the dark.

Whether you decide to use a web camera, IP camera, or a mix of both, incorporating cameras into your home security system is an easy and affordable way to improve your home security and capture precious moments whenever you want. Plus, with the right alarm integration and monitoring service, you can be sure that your home will be protected and you’ll always know when someone’s broken in. With these smart devices and essential security tools, you’ll always feel safe and comfortable in your home.
