How Does a Motion Detector Work?

When it comes to home security, nothing quite says ‘safety’ like a good old-fashioned motion detector. Formed back in the days before smartphones and laptops, these devices have been around for long enough that most homeowners should still have one in their house. What is a motion detector, you ask?

Well, it’s not as scary as it sounds. A motion detector essentially uses a couple of cameras to monitor movement in and around your home. When it detects movement, the detector will often make a loud beeping sound to indicate to you that something is up. Some models also have an alert feature that will send you push notifications via a smartphone app if it detects movement. Whether or not you need an alert, it’s likely that you’ll find the beeping motion detector quite useful. It’ll give you extra peace of mind knowing that at any given moment, you can monitor the entrance to your home from anywhere in the world.

But how does a motion detector work? Let’s take a quick tour of the components inside.

The Hardware

Every motion detector consists of two parts: a control unit and a detector unit. The control unit is typically a small box with an opening on the front. Inside the control unit, you’ll find a circuit board, a microprocessor, a speaker, and a couple of push buttons. Connected to your home wiring, the control unit sends short electrical pulses to the detector unit when it senses movement. These electrical pulses are translated into sound by the detector’s internal speakers. The more pulses that are sent, the louder the sound. So if you’re hearing strange noises at night, it might be a sign that something is up (motion detected). To prevent interference between multiple units, be sure to purchase a dedicated line from an electric company for this purpose.

The detector unit is the part that you’ll connect to the home wiring. It contains two cameras, a speaker, and an infrared (IR) emitter. The cameras capture images of movement in the form of infrared light. The speaker plays the role of a microphone, picking up sounds in the room and translating them into electrical signals. The emitter uses an infrared light to illuminate objects in the room, helping the cameras distinguish between movement and heat radiated by lights, heat lamps, and fireplaces. The emitter will detect people, cars, boats, and animals, among other things.

The Software

If you’re using a smartphone or tablet for this application, then you’ll need to download an app from the Google Play Store or the App Store. Once you’ve installed the app, you’ll be able to set the sensitivity and distance at which the device will listen and look for movement. Many motion detector apps also have features that alert you directly when movement is detected or when somebody enters or exits your house. In the coming weeks, we’ll be publishing a list of the best Android and iPhone apps for home security, so stay tuned!

Nowadays, most people use two-way voice connections to keep in touch with other individuals while performing tasks on their phones. If you’re connected to the internet via WiFi, then you can use Google Hangouts or Skype to video chat with friends and family. Using apps like Zoom and Meetrow, you can also connect with users across the country or around the world via a video call. While these tools allow you to see faces and emotion when communicating, nothing quite beats an old-fashioned face-to-face conversation. So don’t discount the value of a motion detector just because they’re not connected to the internet.

The Importance Of Good Wiring

Before we move on, it’s important to note that the importance of good wiring cannot be overstated. When it comes to home security, having all the wires in the right place is vital for proper operation. This especially applies if you’re using multiple units so that each one can independently monitor activity in different parts of the home. So, while you might want to monitor the entrance to your home for potential intruders, you might also want to monitor your attic, garage, and even your backyard if you have one.

Not only does good wiring ensure that each part of the device functions as intended, but it also prevents potential electrical malfunctions. If you’re not sure where to start, then it’s best to approach an electrician to have all the wires connected in the right place. They will also be able to give you tips on how to properly use your security system and avoid any future malfunctions.

Monitoring Movement In And Around Your Home

Let’s take a quick tour of what the cameras in the radar detector see. As we mentioned before, the radar detector’s camera captures images of movement in the form of infrared light. This allows you to see anything that moves, even if it’s obscured by something else. It also allows nearby buildings, trees, and cars to be seen through the night’s darkness. When a vehicle or person approaches the house, the radar detector will send out pulses that the cameras can pick up. When multiple units are used in series, they will be able to monitor movements in and around your home with more precision and clarity.
